Images are processed entirely in your browser — never uploaded to any server. The recognition engine downloads once from a CDN, then runs locally.

How to extract text from an image

Read the words out of a photograph or scan so you can copy and edit them. The recognition engine runs inside your browser.

  1. Open the Image to Text tool and add the picture containing the text.
  2. Wait while the text is recognised. The first use downloads the recognition engine, which is then cached.
  3. Copy the recognised text, or download it.

Common questions

Is my image sent anywhere?

No. The recognition engine is downloaded to your browser and the picture itself never leaves your device.

Why is the first use slower?

The recognition engine is around 10 MB and is fetched once, then cached. Later uses start immediately.

How accurate is it?

Clear, straight, well-lit text in a common typeface reads very accurately. Handwriting, skewed photographs and low-contrast scans are much harder and may need correcting.
